TikTok has launched a new in-app AI-powered text-to-image generator called the “AI greenscreen” filter. First reported by The Verge, users can now type a prompt like “exploding galaxy flowers” and TikTok will create an abstract interpretation that can be used as a video background.
If nothing else, the effect makes AI image generation much more accessible. Experimental tools like DALL-E are still limited to a select group. TikTok, meanwhile, has over 1 billion monthly users — while few of them are likely to ever use AI-generated art, the addition brings the technology to a much wider audience. Don't be shocked if there are similar implementations elsewhere.
There are some limitations to the new feature. The artwork produced is a swirling, abstract image, so it isn’t ideal for those looking for a clear photograph. Other AI image generators, such as OpenAI’s new DALL-E 2, are capable of spitting out imagery so realistic that a viewer probably wouldn’t be able to tell it was made via AI.
By remaining relatively abstract, TikTok has managed to avoid many of the potential pitfalls associated with text-to-image generators, like displaying obvious biases in its output.
With a community of more than a billion users who are known for experimenting with online art forms, it was probably a good idea that the developers played it safe. Recently, Meta platforms saw similar issues materialize when they let their chatbot learn from internet users.
It may be difficult, not to mention costly, for TikTok to integrate such intricate software into its Android and iOS apps. Additionally, The Verge noted that there could be serious repercussions to granting the platform’s billion-plus users the power to create any photorealistic image they want to.
